For most high school athletes, the goal is to compete at the next level. For Knoxville Catholic senior Gavin Jones, that dream is already becoming reality as he signed with Brown University this past fall, but his latest achievement goes far beyond the field.
Gavin has been named the top honoree for his region by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete program, an honor reserved for just 25 student-athletes nationwide. Even more impressively, this distinction earns him the rare privilege of having his name permanently enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
When he first received the news, Gavin admits it didn’t quite feel real.
“Obviously, there’s some shock in it,” he shared. “But then just gratefulness—for my parents and my community who gave me the ability to work hard and be the student and athlete that I am.”
That humility has defined Gavin’s journey at Knoxville Catholic, where he has excelled in the classroom, on the field, and in his faith.
A Standard of Excellence
Gavin credits much of his discipline to the environment around him—both at home and at school.
“At home, doing your best was always the standard,” he explained. “It wasn’t a pressure to be perfect, but an expectation to always try hard at everything you do.”
That standard was set early. His father, a former Division I athlete at Brown University, and his mother, a standout student in her own right and Clemson grad, instilled in him the importance of hard work and perseverance. Gavin has three older brothers who all played football and graduated from Knoxville Catholic, but it was Eli’s football journey that played a key role, inspiring Gavin from a young age as he watched him pursue collegiate athletics and be signed to play at Western Kentucky in 2022.

At Knoxville Catholic, that foundation only grew stronger for Gavin.
“Being around other great scholars and athletes here pushed me to excel,” he said. “You rise to the level around you.”
Growth Through Challenge
Though Gavin now stands among the nation’s top student-athletes, his journey wasn’t without moments of growth and humility.
“Coming in, I thought things would come easy since all three of my brothers have been here,” he admitted. “But being in a culture of excellence here humbled me. It pushed me to work harder and go after what I wanted.”

That mindset shift paid off. One of his most memorable moments came during his sophomore year, when he was unexpectedly called into a varsity game.
“I made a goal line stop and forced a fumble,” he recalled. “That was when I realized I wanted to play college football.”
From that moment forward, Gavin embraced the grind—guided by teammates, coaches, and mentors who helped shape him not just as a player, but as a leader.
Faith, Academics, and Purpose
Beyond athletics, Gavin has distinguished himself as a dedicated student with a passion for learning. Teachers like Dr. Rizy and Mr. Williams left a lasting impact, encouraging both academic excellence and a deeper integration of faith into his studies.
“Dr. Rizy’s approach is very refreshing. She truly cares about her students and pushes you to reach your potential, but only if you’re willing to do the work. The teachers here really prepare you to be independent and the environment here pushes you to rise to a high level and suceed,” Gavin said. “That’s huge for college, especially somewhere like Brown.”

This fall, Gavin will attend Brown University to continue both his academic and athletic career. While he is currently interested in mechanical engineering, he is eager to explore new opportunities through Brown’s open curriculum.
“I’m excited to figure out who I am and what I want to do,” he said. “That’s something Brown really offers.”
Strength Beyond the Spotlight
Perhaps one of the most defining influences in Gavin’s life is his mother, whom he describes as his greatest role model. Currently undergoing cancer treatment, her strength and faith have left a profound mark on him.
“Her ability to persevere and stay grounded in her faith, even through hardship—it’s incredibly motivating and almost calming,” he shared. “It shows you can go through so much and still be content and have peace.”
It’s that perspective, rooted in gratitude, humility, resilience, and faith that has shaped Gavin into the person he is today.

A Lasting Legacy
Each year, while many student-athletes are recognized by the National Football Foundation, only one from each region is selected as the top honoree—tasked with representing their peers as a speaker and leaving a permanent mark on the sport’s history.
Gavin Jones now joins that elite group.

“Gavin Jones’ recognition by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor and a true reflection of who he is—an exceptional student, a dedicated athlete, and a person of outstanding character,” said Athletics Director Jason Surlas. “We couldn’t be more proud of him.”
“Gavin truly epitomizes the meaning of a student-athlete. His work and success in athletics, academics, and service to the community separates him from most other athletes I have been around.”

Forever Irish
As Gavin prepares for the next chapter, he carries with him the lessons learned at Knoxville Catholic—about hard work, humility, faith, and perseverance.
“Being able to learn, compete, and practice my faith at a place where you’re truly cared for has been, and I think it will be, one of the biggest blessings that I’ll ever be given.” Gavin Jones ’26

If he could offer advice to his younger self, it would be simple:
“Try hard. But give yourself a break sometimes. Enjoy what you’re given and don’t be too critical of yourself.”

It’s advice that reflects both wisdom beyond his years and the journey that brought him here.
From Friday night lights to a place in the College Football Hall of Fame, Gavin Jones’ story is one of dedication, character, and purpose—and one that will continue to inspire long after his time at Knoxville Catholic.
